Meet Class Two
|
 |
|
I would like to introduce you to NPower NY’s newest
Technology Service Corps (TSC) class. What you haven’t
heard of TSC? TSC is an exciting program that trains
young people to be technology staff members at
non-profit organizations. Over the next twelve weeks
these students will be armed with technology
skills sets
and non-profit understanding to make a difference in the
City’s non-profit community come this September. Our
newest class is a talented group that speaks for
themselves. I invite you to read their words to you
below.
Sincerely,
Christine Stearn

Letter from Class Two
Look around you, what do you see? I'll
tell you what we see while you think about it. We refer to Technology Service
Corps, the 6 member team being trained at NPower NY. We see an abundance of
need in our communities. These range from educational programs, such as
tutoring and sports, to job development, placement, and training. NPower NY is
helping come together to form a group and extend to our communities our
experiences, ideas, and skills (especially our technology skills).
Coming from various backgrounds such as work experience, ethnicity, age, etc.,
we understand that our communities need assistance or improvement in numerous
ways. For example, there are young kids on street corners or at home playing
video games with no one to help them with their reading problems. We plan to
use the tech knowledge provided to us by TSC, but we hope that we can also
teach people in our neighborhoods compassion, understanding and value for
communication.
We wish to use technology to empower non-profits and community based
organizations so they can perform their tasks at a quicker, more efficient pace.
We understand that computers and technology sometimes make people feel
threatened or uncomfortable so we want to ease their fears. As we learn what
to do when a tech problem occurs and how to handle it, we become better
prepared to work with community based non-profits on using new advancements to
their benefit. Ironically, as times change, we as people need upgrading as
well. In the TSC program you will see people from the ages of seventeen to
twenty five year olds doing that upgrading.
You see, we as individuals have had to survive and endure various experiences.
Some of us have been raised in poverty or surrounded by violence and crime. In
fact, one of us was raised outside of the U.S. with different beliefs and
culture. Some of us feel that we have been failed by the education system.
Regardless of background, this much we know is true: only action changes
things whether in our personal lives or socially. Knowledge, plus information,
plus action is the basic equation for equalizing mostly any situation.
If you’re still contemplating what it is that you see around you, then we ask
you to take a real good look and analyze your surroundings. Take a minute to
reflect -- Ask yourself, “How can I help change the things around me?”. We
hope you see the need for resources, education, compassion, and leadership,
like we do. We hope that when we are done with this program, you'll be ready,
so we can collectively continue to work toward positive changes.
The members of TSC Class Two are, Robert Bonds, Isaac Delgado, Johnny
Delgado, Jason Feliciano, Jose Guzman, and Francisco Rodriguez. Click on

Francisco (Boobie)
I was raised in Brooklyn, but born in the Bronx. I just want people to look at
me as an example of an individual who has been through a lot of interesting
things and throughout this life I've learned that education and action is a
great combination to work with. It is easy to be naive and ignorant. The
hard part is dealing with the consequences that come once the mistake is
done. Use these key things:
Common sense; discipline; and will.
Use these to get through anything, it will work. The trick is using them
properly.
Blessings to all.

Robert
Before I came to NPower, I always had an interest in
technology. The newest gadgets is what really caught my eye. I knew all
the basics. I knew how to cut them on, check my email and how to get on the
Internet. But when I got accepted to TSC, it gave me this burst of energy.
From there on I just couldn't stop seeking knowledge on this world of technology.
Even before that, I had no idea what so ever on what I wanted to
do with my life. Thanks to the entire staff of NPower NY, TSC and my fellow classmates,
I now have that direction and focus needed to live an entirely new
life. Now I know what I have to do and what it takes to succeed in this
industry. Isaac

Johnny
Hello everyone, welcome to our page. Let me start off by telling you a
little about myself. My name is Johnny, I'm 24 year old Puerto
Rican male living on the lower
east side of Manhattan.....I like long walks in the park, going out to the
movies, candle lit....oooh uuuh this is for TSC and NPower, oops.
But seriously, I have always been into technology. Ever since I was younger, I
loved calculators. They were so cool to me, especially the one on the
Casio wrist watch. If you owned one of those in school, you were the man.
I'm the type of person that sees a new piece of technology and has to have it.
Oh, and I watch a lot of Tech TV. Being a part of NPower's TSC has really
changed my life. I'm finally moving in the right direction. I've
learned that there is only one thing that can hold me back from doing all I'm
capable of, and that's me.
Thank you to all the Staff at NPower NY and Henry Street Settlement, I
could not have done any of this with out you.
Jose
My name is Jose Guzman and I am 19 years old, I live in Brooklyn and I am
currently studying technology at NPower NY's TSC. I became interested in technology not to long ago. I was always
wondering how technology works especially the components of a computer. There
were all these many weird questions in my head and after coming to NPower
(TSC) my questions were answered. After I went through this training
program, I now know a lot more about technology then I ever did before.
Even with all the training and knowledge I've gained, there is still a lot
more to learn. Technology is forever changing.
